I have to be honest with you guys, I am not dying with excitement to dress for the Christmas season! Boooo! Ba Humbug! What a negative way to start a blog post. Bare with me, I am not a negative person – I promise. This is simply because I am not massively loving my body at the moment, but I am slowly but surely making progress and that certainly makes me feel positive. So this edit of course can be shopped by anybody, but will be specifically beneficial to anyone who is currently trying to disguise the fact that they have recently done the most amazing thing in the world (which is to give birth, right). Trust me, I see the irony, but hey ho!
Replace Sequins and Sparkles with Velvet
So first and foremost, I am not a sequins or sparkle girl. I just can’t get down with all the shininess unless its on a Christmas tree and let’s be honest, neither are the most flattering. If there is one fabric that I do find myself drawn to at this time of the year, it’s velvet. Velvet is a slightly more subtle nod to the Christmas cheer. Of course, velvet can too be shiny, however, it’s not so shiny that the Christmas lights will be bouncing off you! Opt for a velvet blazer to make a look Christmas chic and pair with leather trousers.
Leather and Lace Are My Heroes
Leather and lace immediately add interest to an outfit. They just aren’t your everyday fabric, so wearing a leather dress or a lace jumpsuit automatically ups the ante on your look. Of course, I certainly will not be wearing any leather dresses just yet, but leather trousers will certainly be a go to of mine while dressing for the season. I also have two really great white lace dresses in my wardrobe, one from Reiss and one from HM, which I think will look amazing paired with a really strong and sexy black sandal or a pair of long black Balenciaga (or inspired) knife boots. However, my ultimate love for evening wear is black lace. Super sexy and so Dolce and Gabbana.
I tend to wear leather on the lower part of my body to avoid the harshness of leather against my face, so with a trouser or a skirt. Of course, wearing lace on the upper part of the body is fine, because it’s just so pretty and sultry. I will be making sure the lace isn’t to sheer or that I can easily slip a vest beneath it, if the lace is too open.
Black Tailored Trousers instead of Dresses
At the moment, my garment of choice is a pair of jeans. Raw edge, cropped, kick flare or asymmetric hem. This is what I am currently wearing in rotation. For some reason I am just not feeling that comfortable in dresses at the moment and the Georgette dresses that I do love, my husband has told me are unsexy and make me look pregnant! So I won’t be wearing those. However, wearing jeans on a festive night out isn’t very festive! Thankfully there are so many good trouser styles around at the moment, that I would probably enjoy wearing just as much as I would a dress because trousers are just that little bit less predictable.
Silk Shirts and Pussy Bow Blouses
From this edit, you will probably notice that my approach to dressing isn’t overtly or obviously sexy. I don’t do low cut, revealing and certainly not body con. I hate lycra, spandex and nylon and feel like these materials should be saved for the gym, which is probably why I would wear a pussy bow blouse on a night out. I know that these blouses can appear a little stuffy, but in a silky material with the right cut and fit, and styled with a good pair of black trousers and a serious shoe, I think a pussy bow blouse can be elegantly sexy. Needless to say, if the pussy bow isn’t for you, then you can never go wrong with a simple button down silk shirt in black or jewel tones with a pair of leather or tailored black trousers.
Jumpsuits in Black
I adore jumpsuits. They are ridiculously comfortable, they elongate the body, they are so flattering and worn with a pair of heels and some statement earrings, you really can’t go wrong. I always say, if in doubt, just wear a jumpsuit. They are so versatile and can be dressy without being flashy. What I truly adore about a jumpsuit is the relaxed nature it has about it. The fact that such a good garment can be so comfortable and worn so effortlessly makes it super sexy to me. Black jumpsuit, gold heels and gold jewellery and you are done!
