  • How to Dress Now – April Showers

What to wear now to stay warm and dry during the April Showers, whilst maintaining that SPRING in your step!

The April showers really are a thing and they really do throw a spanner in the wardrobe works, don’t they? Most of us by now are well and truly sick of our winter wardrobes and are so excited to see the back of the winter season that we have bought our spring summer clothes to the forefront of our wardrobes, packed away our knitwear and tights and are full on in spring mode. I mean it makes sense right, considering it is spring! The mornings are brighter, the days are longer and the clocks have gone forward. However, there are always the April showers to contend with. It’s my birthday month, so I am very much aware of the weather for birthday party planning purposes – and although I am no weather girl, if my memory serves me correctly we’ve still got a good few weeks till the rain and that chill in the air eases up. More over it is actually freezing (I certainly sound like a weather girl! But in terms of fashion it’s important, so it’s OK!) I would argue that it’s colder now than it was last November.

So Jodie from @jodieandjax asked for some style advice on how to dress NOW in these wintery, blustery April showers. Shockingly enough, I have actually had places to be beyond Allegra’s nursery, that has required to me to be dressed presentably and respective of the weather. Despite the down pours and hailstones, I have firmly committed to not wearing boots. I am just so over winter I can’t even bring myself to put my foot in a boot – it’s the last thing I want to wear. I can see all over Instagram that I am not the only one – because I have seen many a mamas are rocking full on sandals.

    April Shower Shoes

I am not quite sandal ready yet, for one I have not had a pedicure in close to a year, maybe longer and definitely in need of a polish change. Secondly I generally tend to wait till we are further on in the season to go full on summer shoe. What I am currently wearing on my feet now and what you will have seen on my Instagram are, mules and sling backs. Although both are certainly more associated with a summer shoe than they are a winter shoe, they are slightly better for keeping the cold out and the toes dry, should it happen to rain, which in April, it will! Cut-out boots are also one of my favourite style of boot, although they are no longer at the peak of their trend they are undeniably stylish and like slingbacks and mules, still give that spring summer vibe that we are all dying for.

    April Shower Outwear

My outerwear collection is extremely streamlined and extremely classic, so I don’t have loads and loads of options. What I find myself reaching for mostly at this time of year is my leather biker, my Burberry trench coat and lots and lots of blazers. I am not a massive cardigan fan, but if you are wearing slightly lighter items beneath a trench coat or blazer, a cardigan can serve as a very functional item of clothing to slip beneath your outerwear. If you are on the hunt for some light weight outerwear that will offer lots of wear(ability) I would consider going for a double breasted blazer in a heavier woven fabric. Blazers are amazing for going from day to night and can be easily dressed up or down and I would argue that they are generally season-less, so you can wear them all year long. There is no better time for Shackets and Utility jackets than now. For a more casual look utility jackets amazing and great for layering and are so reasonably priced that I would certainly recommend investing in one. They are super versatile too, I recently purchased a shacket/utility jacket from Topshop that is slightly cropped, so although casual has a bit of a sexy edge and looks amazing worn with heels and a red lip in the evenings. I have included many below!

    April Shower Colours

There really isn’t much I do in terms of colour specifically for the April Showers if I am honest. Needless to say I won’t wear white jeans in the midst of a storm, but I do find myself opting for lighter shades of jeans as opposed to black. I will also try to incorporate lighter colour belts into my outfits instead of my standard black. I have recently bought a snakeskin print, a tan and a raffia belt all from Primark. Belts are a really easy way to just add a little something different to a look without doing very much at all and I generally tend to buy my belts from Primark, so I can do this pretty inexpensively. The same applies for bags – if you want to incorporate some form of spring tones into your look but colour isn’t really your style, then opting for handbags in lighter shades or brighter colours is a good way todo this subtly. Of course these just add an aesthetic appeal as opposed to keeping you warm and dry!

    April Showers Final Tips

Needless to say, always carry an umbrella and a bag big enough to fit your brolly in! There’s nothing I hate more than having to carry my umbrella in my hand, you can guarantee I will lose it!

Don’t wear suede shoes, they will get ruined and spray protect any suede that you do wear, just in case you get caught in a down pour!

Flared and wide leg jeans are all the hype at the minute. Unless they are cropped, or you are wearing a substantial heel that lifts the hem from the ground, I would steer clear of wearing them while it’s wet – there is nothing more unaesthetically pleasing and unhygenic than jean hems dragging on the ground soaked in wet dirt!

Layers! £4 spaghetti strap bodysuits from Primark are perfect for wearing beneath blouses and shirts to add an extra layer of warmth. And go for cardigans that are cropped or three quarter sleeve and short in the body, so they can fit discreetly beneath your blazer or shacket, even if you decide to ruche up your sleeves.

Happy Spring my Lovelies, I hope this has made you feel that bit warmer.
